Puerto San José is a prominent port city located in the Escuintla Department along Guatemala's Pacific coast. Founded in 1853 to replace the older port of Iztapa, it served for many decades as the nation's primary maritime gateway to the Pacific Ocean. Although most modern commercial shipping has shifted to the nearby specialized port of Puerto Quetzal, Puerto San José remains an essential center for the fishing industry and regional tourism. Situated at sea level, the city is characterized by its hot tropical climate and extensive beaches featuring dark volcanic sand. Puerto San José is a favorite weekend getaway for residents of Guatemala City, resulting in a well-established tourist infrastructure of hotels and restaurants. Historically, the port played a decisive role in the exportation of coffee during the economic boom of the late 19th century. Today, the city also hosts a national air force base and acts as a starting point for exploring the coastal canals and protected natural areas of the Pacific lowlands.
