The Semperoper in Dresden is one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world and the magnificent centerpiece of the Saxon state capital at Theaterplatz. Named after its architect Gottfried Semper, the building originally opened in 1841 but burnt down completely in 1869. The second structure, built in the Italian Renaissance style, was completed in 1878 and destroyed once again during the bombing of Dresden in February 1945. After a faithful reconstruction, the house reopened on February 13, 1985, exactly 40 years after its destruction. The Semperoper serves as the venue for the Saxon State Opera Dresden and the Saxon State Orchestra, one of the oldest orchestras in the world. Famous composers such as Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss celebrated numerous world premieres of their works here. The architecture impresses with its rich interior decoration, grand staircases, and an auditorium with excellent acoustics that accommodates approximately 1,300 guests.
