The Porta Nigra in Trier is the best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps and an outstanding monument of ancient architecture. This monumental gate, constructed of light sandstone, was built in the late 2nd century AD as part of Trier's city fortifications. It earned its name, the 'Black Gate', in the Middle Ages due to the dark patina formed by centuries of weathering. The structure survived through the ages primarily because it was converted into a double church in the 11th century, which spared it from being dismantled for building materials. By order of Napoleon, starting in 1802, the additions were removed to restore it to its original Roman form. Today, the Porta Nigra is a UNESCO World Heritage site that fascinates visitors with its massive dimensions and precise mortarless construction. It remains the iconic symbol of Trier and a vital link to Germany's Roman heritage.
