Stolzenfels Castle
Stolzenfels Castle rises picturesquely on the left bank of the Rhine near Koblenz and is considered the epitome of Rhine Romanticism. Originally built in the 13th century as a toll castle by Archbishop Arnold II of Isenburg, the complex was destroyed by French troops in 1689 during the Nine Years' War. It was not until the 19th century that it was rebuilt by Prussian Crown Prince Frederick William IV in the Neo-Gothic style, following plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The castle is characterized by its ochre facades, magnificent murals in the Knights' Hall, and extensive terraced gardens. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley, it represents Prussian influence in the Rhine Province and the longing for an idealized medieval world. The interior decoration, featuring original furniture and artworks, provides an authentic impression of 19th-century royal residential culture today.
