Situated directly at the confluence of the Nahe and the Rhine, Bingen commands the southern entrance to the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The town’s location has made it a strategic toll and defensive point since Roman times. Its most iconic structure is the Mäuseturm (Mouse Tower), a former customs tower standing isolated on a small island in the fast-flowing river, infamous in folklore as the site where Archbishop Hatto was allegedly devoured by mice. Overlooking the center is Burg Klopp, a meticulously restored medieval fortress that currently houses the city administration and provides expansive views over the Rhine Gorge and the heavily terraced vineyards. Bingen is intimately connected to Hildegard von Bingen, the 12th-century polymath and mystic; her legacy is carefully preserved in the museum am Strom, located directly on the active river promenade. The Rochusberg, a hill rising behind the town, features the Rochuskapelle and numerous vineyard trails, serving as an excellent vantage point for watching the heavy barge traffic navigate the tricky river bends leading towards the Loreley rock further downstream.
