Rheinstein Castle (Germany)

Weather…

Rheinstein Castle (Burg Rheinstein) is a prime example of castle reconstruction in the style of Rhine Romanticism, spectacularly situated on a rocky ridge above the Rhine near Trechtingshausen. Originally built in the 14th century as Voitsberg Castle, it served to secure tolls and defend against robber barons. After falling into ruin, it was rebuilt between 1825 and 1829 by Prussian Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig. It was the first castle on the Middle Rhine to be reconstructed in this manner, setting a trend for many further projects in the region. The complex impresses with its Neo-Gothic architectural elements, artistic leaded glass windows, and reconstructed living quarters with historical inventory. The castle chapel houses the tomb of Prince Friedrich. Today, the castle is privately owned and houses a museum and a restaurant with broad views over the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The castle garden, with its lush vegetation, contributes to the scenic atmosphere. The castle is a popular destination for hikers on the Rheinsteig trail.
