The Hagenbeck Animal Park in Hamburg is world-famous for its revolutionary enclosure design introduced by Carl Hagenbeck in the early 20th century. Instead of using iron bars, he utilized moats and natural barriers to allow animals more freedom and provide visitors with an unobstructed view of the habitats. The 19-hectare site houses over 1,800 animals and includes a significant botanical garden. A modern highlight is the 'Polar Sea', a spacious facility for polar bears and walruses that also provides underwater views. The Tropical Aquarium transports visitors into a world of sharks and exotic reptiles under a massive dome. The animal park remains privately owned by the Hagenbeck family to this day and operates without government subsidies. The heritage-listed Art Nouveau gate at the entrance commemorates the park's long tradition as one of Europe's leading zoological institutions.
