The Kramer-Amtsstuben, located near St. Michaelis Church, are among the last remaining examples of typical 17th-century courtyard housing in Hamburg. These narrow half-timbered houses were built between 1620 and 1676 by the grocers' guild (Krameramt) to provide rent-free accommodation for the widows of deceased guild members. These social facilities offered not only shelter but also a supportive community for women in the then densely populated Neustadt district. Today, the ensemble forms a scenic retreat that has preserved the charm of bygone eras with its small shops and a traditional restaurant. One of the apartments has been meticulously preserved as a museum, giving visitors an authentic impression of living conditions in the 19th century. Miraculously, the historic buildings survived both the Great Fire of 1842 and the heavy bombing raids of World War II, remaining a testament to Hamburg's urban history.
