Altona is today a western borough of Hamburg, but for centuries it was an independent city under Danish administration. Founded in 1535 as a fishing settlement, it was granted city rights in 1664 by the Danish King Frederick III. Due to its religious tolerance and competition with neighboring Hamburg, Altona developed into a major commercial center. It was only in 1937 that Altona was officially integrated into the Hanseatic city through the Greater Hamburg Act. Architecturally, the district is characterized by magnificent buildings such as the Altona City Hall and the Palmaille, a historic boulevard lined with Neoclassical villas. A central cultural attraction is the Altona Fish Market, which has been held every Sunday morning since 1703. Today, the borough is known for its animated cultural scene, its parks along the Elbe River, and the multicultural atmosphere in neighborhoods like Ottensen. Altona has retained its distinct identity and is considered one of Hamburg's most desirable residential areas.
