Bergedorf is a historically rich district in southeastern Hamburg that remained an independent city until its incorporation in 1937. The architectural center of the district is Bergedorf Castle, the only surviving moated castle within Hamburg's city limits, which now houses a museum dedicated to local history. Another scientific highlight is the Hamburg Observatory, established on the Gojenberg hill in 1909 and recognized as a significant industrial monument of astronomy. Bergedorf also serves as the gateway to the Vier- und Marschlande region, a vast area world-renowned for its specialized horticulture and flower production. The blend of a historic old town, cultural venues, and proximity to nature makes the district a favored residential area and excursion destination. With its direct connection to the Bille River and numerous green spaces, the neighborhood gives a high quality of life away from the hustle and bustle of the inner city.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
