St. Michaelis Church
St. Michaelis Church, affectionately known by locals as "Michel," is the most significant Baroque building in Northern Germany and a world-famous landmark of Hamburg. Its striking copper-covered spire rises 132 meters high and has served for centuries as a vital navigational aid for sailors on the Elbe River. The spacious interior can accommodate up to 2,500 people, making it one of the largest churches in the city. The history of the structure is defined by several cycles of destruction and reconstruction, including a catastrophic fire in 1906 and severe damage during World War II. A particularly noteworthy feature is the crypt, which serves as the final resting place for eminent figures like composer Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Today, the church remains an active place of worship and a major tourist attraction, with its observation deck offering dramatic panoramic views of the harbor and cityscape.
