Port of La Union (El Salvador)

Weather…

The Port of La Unión, also known as Puerto Cutuco, is strategically located in the Gulf of Fonseca in eastern El Salvador. This ambitious modernization project was carried out between 2005 and 2008 with massive financial support from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The primary goal was to transform the port into Central America's most advanced container terminal, capable of handling Post-Panamax class vessels. The facility spans an area of 40 hectares and features a 560-meter-long container quay. Despite technical challenges regarding the siltation of the access channel, the port remains a central element in the government's plan for the economic revitalization of the eastern region. It is directly connected to the Pan-American Highway and is intended to function as a commercial hub for trade between El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The infrastructure includes state-of-the-art crane systems and specialized storage areas.
