Tenancingo is a historically rich town in the Cuscatlán Department of El Salvador, known for its traditional craftsmanship and its turbulent history during the civil war. Its name originates from Nahuatl, meaning 'place of small walls.' The town is nationally famous for the production of hand-woven hats made from palm fibers, a tradition that residents have maintained for generations. Geographically, Tenancingo is situated in a mountainous region with a pleasant climate, surrounded by coffee plantations and dense forests. In September 1983, the town was severely damaged by an airstrike during the armed conflict, leading to a temporary depopulation. Following the war, residents returned and rebuilt their community with international assistance, turning Tenancingo into a symbol of resilience and reconciliation. Today's architecture is a blend of restored colonial buildings and more modern structures. A visit to Tenancingo features insights into authentic Salvadoran rural life and the opportunity to purchase high-quality handicrafts directly from the makers.
