Bocas Islands (Trinidad and Tobago)

Weather…

The Bocas Islands, locally referred to as 'Down de Islands,' are situated in the Bocas del Dragón (Dragon's Mouths) strait between the northwestern coast of Trinidad and Venezuela. The group consists of several primary islands, including Monos, Huevos, Chacachacare, and Gaspar Grande. These islands feature a rugged limestone topography with numerous hidden coves and sea caves. Gaspar Grande is particularly famous for the Gasparee Caves, a spectacular underground system of caverns featuring a clear subterranean pool. Chacachacare has a diverse history, having served as a cotton plantation, a whaling station, and most notably as a leper colony from 1922 to 1984, the ruins of which remain visible today. The surrounding waters are highly popular for sailing, fishing, and weekend recreation for residents of Port of Spain. Due to their strategic position, the islands were historically significant for defending the entrance to the Gulf of Paria during colonial times. The wildlife is closely related to that of the South American mainland; for instance, Monos Island is named after the howler monkeys found there. The archipelago features a unique blend of natural wonders and poignant historical narratives.
