Carenage Defensive Site

Weather…
Water temperature…
The Carenage defensive site, dominated by the imposing Fort George, is a pivotal landmark of British military history in the Caribbean. Fort George was commissioned in 1804 by Governor Sir Thomas Hislop on the hills overlooking Carenage to safeguard Port of Spain against a feared Napoleonic invasion. The fortification was considered impregnable and was uniquely designed to provide a secure refuge for the entire population of the city in the event of an attack. Although the fort never saw active combat, it remained a vital military outpost until 1846. The preserved structures feature massive stone walls, original cannon batteries, and a functional signal station once used for maritime communication within the Gulf of Paria. Carenage itself derives its name from the practice of 'careening' or tilting ships for maintenance in the calm waters of the bay. Today, the site features profound historical context alongside some of the most spectacular panoramic views of Trinidad's western coastline.
