Fort George (Trinidad and Tobago)

Weather…

Fort George is a historic fortification perched on a hill 340 metres above Port of Spain in northern Trinidad. Built in 1804 under the direction of British Governor Sir Thomas Hislop, the fort was designed to defend the capital against potential naval attacks from the Napoleonic fleet. Its strategic location provides an unparalleled panoramic view of the city, the Gulf of Paria, and on clear days, the coastline of Venezuela. The installation features massive stone ramparts, original powder magazines, and a collection of 19th-century cannons that remain in their original positions. A significant historical feature is the signal station, which remained operational until the late 1800s to announce the arrival of merchant and military vessels. Today, Fort George serves as a well-maintained historical park, offering a peaceful retreat from the urban activity below.
