Gasparee Caves (Trinidad and Tobago)

Weather…

The Gasparee Caves are a sweeping system of natural limestone caverns located on Gasparee Island (Gaspar Grande), off the western coast of Trinidad. These caves were formed over millions of years by the chemical action of acidic rainwater dissolving the limestone rock, resulting in a striking display of stalactites and stalagmites. The centerpiece of the system is the 'Blue Grotto', a deep cavern featuring a crystal-clear underground pool that glows with an intense sapphire blue light when illuminated by sunbeams filtering through openings above. Situated about 30 meters below the surface, the caves offer a cool and constant temperature. Historically, the island and its caves were strategically used by Allied forces during World War II for coastal defense, and remains of gun emplacements are still visible nearby. Today, the Gasparee Caves are a premier destination for guided eco-tours departing from Chaguaramas, celebrated for their unique geological features and the mystical beauty of the subterranean lake.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Gasparee Caves are located on the island of Gaspar Grande. Visitors must take a boat from one of the marinas in Chaguaramas, which is located just west of Port of Spain, followed by a short hike up to the cave entrance.
📅
Best season
The caves can be visited year-round. However, visiting during midday is often recommended as sunlight can enter through openings in the ceiling, beautifully illuminating the turquoise waters of the underground pool.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Inside the limestone cave system, the terrain involves steep metal stairs and walkways. The ground can be quite slippery due to high humidity and dripping water, so careful footing is required while exploring the chambers.
🎒
What to bring
Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip to handle the potentially wet cave floors. Lightweight, breathable clothing is best, and don't forget a camera to capture the impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
🅿️
Parking
Ample parking is available at the various marinas in Chaguaramas where boats depart for Gaspar Grande. Most marinas provide secure, paid parking areas where you can safely leave your vehicle during your trip to the island.
⚠️
Safety
Follow the instructions of your guide at all times and stay on the designated walkways. Be mindful of low ceilings in certain sections of the cave and watch your head to avoid injury while moving through the underground passages.
⏱️
Time needed
A guided tour of Gasparee Caves typically lasts about 1 to 2 hours. Including the boat transfers to and from Chaguaramas, visitors should plan for a total excursion time of approximately 3 to 4 hours.
