Caroni River

The Caroni River is the longest and most significant river in Trinidad and Tobago, flowing for approximately 40 kilometers through the northern plains of the island of Trinidad. Originating in the lush heights of the Northern Range, it winds its way westward before emptying into the Gulf of Paria near the capital city. At its mouth lies the expansive Caroni Swamp, the nation's largest mangrove wetland and an internationally recognized Ramsar site of critical ecological importance. This vast ecosystem is world-famous as the primary nesting ground for the Scarlet Ibis, Trinidad's national bird, renowned for its brilliant flame-colored plumage. Historically, the river served as a vital transportation artery for the sugar industry and continues to be a primary source for agricultural irrigation in the central lowlands today. Guided boat tours through the river's intricate network of mangrove channels are a premier ecotourism activity, providing visitors with rare opportunities to spot caimans, tree snakes, and hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds.
