Bush Bush Sanctuary
Bush Bush Sanctuary is a unique wildlife reserve located on an elevated 'island' within the vast Nariva Swamp. Because of its higher ground, this area is not permanently inundated, which has allowed for the development of a dense, semi-evergreen seasonal forest. The sanctuary is world-famous for its primate populations, particularly the Red Howler and the White-fronted Capuchin monkeys. Biologists have used Bush Bush as an outdoor laboratory for decades to study tropical diseases and mammalian ecology. The isolation provided by the surrounding swamp has natural protection against human encroachment, although it also makes visitor access challenging, usually requiring a boat journey. In addition to monkeys, the sanctuary is home to numerous reptiles, including anacondas and caimans, as well as an impressive variety of butterflies. The preservation of Bush Bush is critical for the survival of endangered species in eastern Trinidad.
