St. Joseph, originally known as San José de Oruña, is the oldest town in Trinidad and served as the island's first capital from 1592 until 1784. Founded by Antonio de Berrío, the town has a turbulent history marked by Spanish conquest, raids by Sir Walter Raleigh, and significant military mutinies. Geographically, it is located at the base of the Northern Range on the banks of the St. Joseph River, a location that once offered vital strategic advantages. Today, the town is a major cultural and religious hub, home to the historic St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church and the gateway to the Mount St. Benedict Monastery. Despite its modern integration into the East-West Corridor, St. Joseph retains a distinct colonial atmosphere, evidenced by its narrow streets and heritage buildings. It also serves as an educational center with several prestigious secondary schools. As the site of the first permanent European settlement, St. Joseph remains a cornerstone of the colonial heritage of Trinidad and Tobago.
