His intention was to 'exorcise' the volcano, as the Spanish conquistadors believed the glowing lava lake inside to be the mouth of hell, calling it 'Boca del Infierno'. The current cross is a modern reconstruction of the original and marks one of the park's highest and most panoramic viewpoints. From this vantage point, visitors can look directly into the active crater, where sulfurous gases constantly escape into the atmosphere. Reaching the cross involves climbing a long stone staircase that follows the rim of the crater, requiring some physical exertion.
