Bobadilla Cross (Nicaragua)

Weather…

The Bobadilla Cross is perched on the edge of the massive Santiago crater within the Masaya Volcano National Park. It was originally erected in 1529 by the Spanish Franciscan friar Francisco de Bobadilla. His intention was to 'exorcise' the volcano, as the Spanish conquistadors believed the glowing lava lake inside to be the mouth of hell, calling it 'Boca del Infierno'. The current cross is a modern reconstruction of the original and marks one of the park's highest and most panoramic viewpoints. From this vantage point, visitors can look directly into the active crater, where sulfurous gases constantly escape into the atmosphere. Reaching the cross involves climbing a long stone staircase that follows the rim of the crater, requiring some physical exertion. The site uniquely blends indigenous beliefs regarding natural forces with colonial Christian traditions. It remains a focal point for both nature lovers and those interested in the historical meeting of cultures in the Americas.
