Located on the western edge of Managua, the crater rim is reachable by car or taxi from the city center, followed by a descent on foot.

The dry season, from November to April, is generally the safest time to visit, as heavy rain can make the steep crater slopes extremely slippery.

The crater walls are noticeably steep, rugged, and heavily vegetated. Trails leading down to the water level are unpaved, uneven, and can be challenging.
