The National Zoological Garden of Nicaragua is located at kilometer 16 of the highway to Masaya, situated between the capital city of Managua and Masaya. Since its establishment in the late 1970s, it has developed into a vital institution for the protection and conservation of the country's native wildlife. The dry season from November to April is most pleasant for a zoo visit, with less rain and clean paths. Many animals are more active due to mild temperatures.
Best time of day
Early morning, shortly after opening, animals are especially active after the night's rest and are being fed. Late afternoon is also good when the heat subsides.
Etiquette
Do not feed the animals - many have special diets and human food can make them sick. Do not throw rubbish into enclosures or tap on glass.
What to bring
Comfortable shoes and sun protection are essential for a long walk around the zoo. A camera and a hat against the sun are recommended.
