San Jerónimo Church
The San Jerónimo Church in Masaya is the spiritual heart of the city, dedicated to Saint Jerome, the patron saint of Masaya. The current building was constructed in the early 20th century after previous structures were destroyed by wars and natural disasters. Its architecture features a neoclassical style with an imposing dome and two bell towers that dominate the city's skyline. The church is world-renowned for hosting the annual festivities in honor of Saint Jerome in September, which are among the longest and most spirited patronal festivals in Nicaragua. During this period, the saint's statue is carried through the streets in massive processions accompanied by traditional music and folk dances like the 'Torovenado'. The church suffered damage during the earthquake of 2000 but has since been carefully restored to its former glory. It stands as a symbol of the profound Catholic faith and cultural pride of Masaya, known as the 'City of Flowers'.
