Fort Haldane (Jamaica)

Weather…

Fort Haldane, located on a strategic cliff overlooking the harbor of Port Maria in St. Mary, was constructed in 1759. Named after General George Haldane, who was the Governor of Jamaica at the time, the fort was built to defend the northern coast from naval attacks by European rivals and to monitor local internal unrest. The fortification played a critical role during Tacky's Rebellion in 1760, which was one of the largest and most significant slave uprisings in the British Empire before the 19th century. Rebel forces, led by Tacky, initially captured the fort to secure gunpowder and weapons before moving inland. Today, several original cannons from the reign of King George II remain on the site, still pointed out toward the Caribbean Sea. The ruins of the powder magazine and the defensive walls provide a clear example of 18th-century military engineering. The site also features a panoramic view of Cabarita Island and the historic Port Maria bay.
