Szerencs Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Szerencs Castle, located at the southern foot of the Zemplén Mountains, is a significant monument of Hungarian Renaissance architecture. The fortress was built in the mid-16th century using the walls of a 12th-century Benedictine abbey, which was converted for military use due to the increasing Ottoman threat. Its most prominent period is linked to the Rákóczi family, starting in 1586 when Zsigmond Rákóczi took the estate as a pledge, eventually receiving it as a royal gift in 1603. The castle features a characteristic square floor plan with corner bastions reinforced according to contemporary military engineering principles. After the 18th century, its military importance diminished, and it served as an economic and residential center for the Aspremont and Széchenyi families. A comprehensive historical restoration took place in the 1960s to preserve its Renaissance heritage and structural integrity. Today, it houses the Zemplén Museum, which features one of the world's largest collections of historical postcards and exhibits on the history of local sugar production.
