Megyer-hegy Tarn (Hungary)

Weather…

The Megyer-hegyi tengerszem (Tarn of Megyer Hill) is a former millstone quarry near Sárospatak, where extraction began as early as the 15th century. After quarrying operations ceased in 1907, rainwater gradually accumulated in the excavation pit, creating the spectacular lake seen today. The vertical rock walls tower up to 70 meters above the water surface, with the lake reaching a maximum depth of approximately 6.5 meters. In 1997, the area was declared a national nature reserve due to its unique geological and landscape values. The 'Malomkő' (Millstone) nature trail guides visitors through the site, detailing the harsh working conditions of former miners and the mountain's geological formation. Voted Hungary's most beautiful natural wonder in 2011, the site is now a popular destination for hikers and photographers in the Zemplén Mountains.
