Tela is a prominent port city on the Caribbean coast of Honduras, located in the Atlántida department, and serves as one of the nation's premier tourist destinations. The city was founded in 1524 by the Spanish conquistador Cristóbal de Olid under the name Triunfo de la Cruz. In the early 20th century, Tela entered a golden era as the headquarters of the United Fruit Company, which significantly influenced the local architecture and railway infrastructure. Today, the region is celebrated for its pristine sandy beaches and its proximity to major protected areas, such as the Jeanette Kawas National Park. Another highlight is the Lancetilla Botanical Garden, one of the largest tropical gardens in the world, originally established as an experimental station for exotic fruits. The local culture is deeply enriched by the Garifuna communities residing in nearby coastal villages. Tela uniquely blends colonial history, the era of banana production, and modern ecotourism initiatives along the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.
