Santa Catalina Arch (Guatemala)

Weather…

The Santa Catalina Arch is the most recognizable landmark in Antigua Guatemala and one of the most photographed structures in Central America. Built in 1694, the bright yellow arch originally served a very specific functional purpose: it connected the Santa Catalina convent with the school across the street. This allowed the cloistered nuns to pass from one building to the other without being seen by the public or breaking their vow of seclusion. The iconic clock tower atop the arch was added much later, in 1830, during the era of the Federal Republic of Central America. Remarkably, the arch survived the massive 1773 Santa Marta earthquakes that destroyed most of the city's other colonial buildings. Today, it stands as the centerpiece of 5th Avenue North, perfectly framing the Agua Volcano in the distance on clear days. It remains a powerful symbol of the city's colonial heritage and architectural resilience.
