Santo Domingo Monastery (Guatemala)

Weather…

The Santo Domingo Monastery in Antigua Guatemala was once one of the largest and most magnificent monasteries in the New World. Founded in the 16th century by the Dominican Order, it served as a spiritual and educational center for the region. The extensive grounds included a monumental church, cloisters, libraries, and pharmacies. Severe earthquakes, particularly the Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773, destroyed large parts of the structure and led to the monastery's abandonment. Today, the restored ruins house the renowned Hotel Casa Santo Domingo as well as several museums, including the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Colonial Art. Visitors can explore the underground crypts, the remains of the main church, and the elaborately landscaped gardens. The site combines colonial history with modern luxury hospitality and cultural preservation. Santo Domingo remains a symbol of the former religious power in the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala.
