La Merced Church (Guatemala)

Weather…

The La Merced Church in Antigua Guatemala is a masterpiece of the Ultra-Baroque style, widely considered the most beautiful church in the city. Construction on the current building began in 1749 and was finished in 1767. Its facade is famous for its intricate white stucco filigree set against a bright yellow background, featuring detailed floral and vine patterns. To combat the frequent seismic activity of the region, the architects designed the church with short, squat proportions and exceptionally thick walls. This 'earthquake-baroque' design proved effective when the structure survived the 1773 Santa Marta earthquakes with minimal damage. Adjacent to the church lie the ruins of the Mercedarian monastery, which houses the Fuente de la Fama. This 18th-century fountain is the largest in Central America, measuring 27 meters in diameter and shaped like a water lily. The church continues to be an active place of worship and serves as a major hub for the city's world-famous Holy Week processions.
