San Francisco El Grande Church
The San Francisco El Grande Church is one of the oldest and most historically significant religious sites in Antigua Guatemala. While the first chapel was established here as early as 1542, the current grand structure largely dates to the early 18th century following several reconstructions due to earthquake damage. Its impressive facade is a prime example of Spanish Baroque architecture, adorned with stone carvings of saints and twisting columns. The church is most famous for housing the tomb of Hermano Pedro de San José Betancur, Central America's first saint, who founded a hospital and schools for the poor in the 17th century. His shrine remains a major pilgrimage site for Catholics throughout the region. The attached monastery was once one of the largest in the Spanish colonies, covering several city blocks; today, much of it remains in pretty ruins. Despite the destruction of the 1773 Santa Marta earthquakes, the main church was restored in the 1960s and continues to be an active parish.
