Palace of the Captains General (Guatemala)

Weather…

The Palace of the Captains General is a massive government building located on the southern side of the Plaza Mayor in Antigua Guatemala. Originally completed in 1549, it served for over two centuries as the headquarters of the Spanish colonial administration for all of Central America. From this palace, the Captaincy General governed territories spanning from southern Mexico to present-day Costa Rica. The building is famous for its grand double-arched facade, featuring 54 stone arches that stretch across the entire block. After suffering severe damage during the 1773 Santa Marta earthquakes, the structure was partially rebuilt and underwent significant restoration in the 20th century. During the colonial era, it housed the Royal Mint, military barracks, a jail, and the private residence of the Captain General. Today, it serves as a cultural hub, housing government offices, the tourism board, and a museum that details the city's historical importance.
