Annaberg-Buchholz serves as the unofficial capital of the Saxon Ore Mountains, renowned as a major center for traditional woodcarving and bobbin lacemaking. The cityscape is unmistakably dominated by St. Anne's Church, the largest late-Gothic hall church in Saxony, which houses a meticulously crafted 16th-century miners' altar. The region's industrial heritage comes alive at the Frohnauer Hammer, a historic water-powered forge that remains fully functional today. Another famous historical resident was the mathematician Adam Ries, whose former home has been converted into an interactive museum. Beneath the old town lies the extensive tunnel system of the Markus-Röhling-Stolln visitor mine, which can be explored via an authentic underground mine train. Annaberg-Buchholz is most lively during the advent season, when its traditional Christmas market and the grand miners' parade draw thousands of visitors. Shop windows display classic wooden crafts, ranging from nutcrackers to the arched candle holders known as Schwibbögen. When it's time to eat, try the local "Klitscher," a savory pan-fried potato cake typically served with applesauce or meat.
