Jewish Worms (Germany)

Weather…

The Jewish quarter in Worms is a centerpiece of the ShUM cities of Speyer, Worms, and Mainz, which have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2021. In the Middle Ages, Worms was a significant center of Jewish scholarship in Europe, known as 'Little Jerusalem'. Key structures include the synagogue, whose origins date back to 1034 and which was faithfully rebuilt after its destruction in 1938. Immediately adjacent is the mikveh, a 12th-century ritual bath that reaches deep into the earth. Particularly impressive is the 'Holy Sands' (Heiliger Sand) Jewish cemetery, which, with tombstones dating from the 11th century, is considered the oldest preserved Jewish cemetery in Europe. Famous scholars like Rashi worked here and significantly shaped Jewish exegesis. Despite repeated persecutions and destructions, the spiritual heritage of the quarter remained spirited for centuries. Today, the quarter is a place of remembrance and research that attracts visitors from all over the world. The architecture and the inscriptions on the tombstones tell the story of the community's eventful history.
