At this city festival people dine and celebrate at long tables in the historic old town of the Hanseatic city, evoking its Hanseatic past. An annual highlight.
The historic Hanseatic city of Stade is idyllically situated on the Schwinge river shortly before it flows into the Elbe, looking back on over a thousand years of history. For centuries, it was a formidable economic rival to neighboring Hamburg. The historic Hansehafen forms the heart of the old town; here, a reconstructed wooden treadwheel crane bears witness to the rich maritime trading past of the city. The narrow streets are lined with meticulously restored timber-framed houses that reflect the distinctive charm of Northern German brick gothic architecture. An outstanding cultural monument is the Schwedenspeicher, a massive brick building dating back to the period of Swedish rule in the seventeenth century, which today houses a modern regional museum. The imposing church towers of St. Cosmae and St. Wilhadi rise high above the rooftops and dominate the skyline. Visitors appreciate the maritime atmosphere, the historic sailing ships moored in the harbor, and the nearby Elbe marshes.
