Osnabrück is located in southwestern Lower Saxony between the Teutoburg Forest and the Wiehen Hills and is known as the 'City of Peace'. This title commemorates the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, which was signed in the town halls of Osnabrück and Münster after years of negotiations, ending the Thirty Years' War. The historic Town Hall with its Hall of Peace remains the city's most significant landmark today. The old town features magnificent half-timbered houses and the late Romanesque St. Peter's Cathedral. Another cultural highlight is the Felix Nussbaum House, a museum building designed by architect Daniel Libeskind dedicated to the life and work of the Jewish painter born in Osnabrück.
