Celle is a photogenic city in Lower Saxony, often regarded as the southern gateway to the Lüneburg Heath and world-famous for its exceptionally well-preserved old town. The urban landscape is defined by nearly 500 meticulously restored half-timbered houses, forming one of the largest continuous ensembles of its kind in Europe. The magnificent Celle Castle, founded in the 13th century as a fortress, served for centuries as the residence of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg, blending architectural styles from the Renaissance to the Baroque. Geographically located on the Aller River, the city was historically a vital hub for trade in northern Germany. Another cultural highlight is the Celle Castle Theatre, established in 1674, which is considered the oldest Baroque theatre in Europe still in regular use. Beyond its architecture, Celle is renowned for the Lower Saxony State Stud, maintaining a long tradition of horse breeding. Today, the city successfully blends its ducal history with a modern economy, where tourism and the oil industry play significant roles.
