Oldenburg was once the residence of the Counts and later the Grand Dukes of Oldenburg, and it continues to radiate a distinguished, upper-bourgeois atmosphere today. At the center of this university city stands the imposing Oldenburg Castle alongside its magnificent castle garden, laid out in the style of an English landscape park, drawing numerous walkers on sunny days. Right next door, the cityscape is dominated by the Lamberti Church, whose neo-Gothic exterior facade stands in sharp contrast to its classically designed interior. The city is home to several top-tier museums, including the Horst Janssen Museum, which is dedicated to modern graphic art, and the State Museum for Art and Cultural History. The extensive pedestrian zone is one of the oldest contiguous car-free areas in Germany, offering a variety of independent shops, historic merchant houses, and cozy cafés. Oldenburg is also characterized by a highly developed cycling culture; locals traditionally make almost all their daily journeys on two wheels. Due to its proximity to the North Sea and the lush, green surroundings of the Ammerland region, the city serves as an outstanding destination for urban weekend trips.
