Altes Land – Apple Orchards (Germany)

Weather…

The Altes Land, located on the outskirts of Hamburg, is Northern Europe's largest contiguous fruit-growing region and is primarily famous for its massive apple production. The region stretches along the Elbe River and covers an area of about 14,300 hectares, where millions of fruit trees flourish. The fertile soil of the Elbe marshes and the maritime climate provide optimal growing conditions for apples. The Altes Land is particularly striking during the spring blossom season, when the entire region is transformed into a sea of white and pink flowers. The tradition of fruit farming dates back to the 14th century, when Cistercian monks began draining the marshlands. A distinctive feature of the area is the ornate timber-framed houses with artistically crafted gateways, reflecting the historical wealth of the fruit growers. Today, several hundred thousand tons of apples are harvested annually, including varieties such as Elstar, Jonagold, and the regional classic Holsteiner Cox. The Altes Land also serves as a vital recreational area for the Hamburg metropolitan region.
