Elmshorn, the sixth-largest city in Schleswig-Holstein, is conveniently situated on the small river Krückau, which flows into the Elbe just a few kilometers downstream. The city looks back on a proud industrial past, once characterized by shipyards, leather factories, and food processing industries. Today, these historical traces can be explored in the curated Industrial Museum, which brings the working-class history of the region back to life. The cityscape is dominated by the magnificent St. Nikolai Church, whose prominent tower marks the historic center. A very special nature experience is provided by the Liether Kalkgrube, a geological nature reserve on the outskirts of the town, where visitors can marvel at rare rock layers and unique local flora. Along the Krückau river, well-maintained paths invite for extensive walks and cycling tours towards the Elbe marshes. Elmshorn features visitors a highly appealing combination of Northern German industrial heritage, city culture, and nature-oriented recreation.
