Lingen is the largest town in the Emsland district, situated directly on the banks of the Ems River, not far from the Dutch border. The town looks back on over a thousand years of history, which is clearly reflected in the architecture of its historic center. The focal point is the lively market square featuring the Historic Town Hall built in 1555, an eye-catching building characterized by its stepped gable and a carillon that plays hourly. Other significant monuments include the Danckelmann Palace and the Holy Cross Church (Kreuzkirche). A highly unique tradition in Lingen is the Kivelingsfest, a festival held every three years organized by the unarmed sons of the townsfolk, known as Kivelinge, to commemorate the heroic defense of the town in 1372. Aside from its historical appeal, its proximity to water plays a major role in local tourism: the Ems River and the Dortmund-Ems Canal provide excellent conditions for canoe trips, boating, and cycling along the Ems Cycle Route (Emsradweg). Culturally, the town has established itself as an event hub through the Emslandhallen, which regularly hosts concerts and trade fairs. Visitors appreciate the blend of lively urban flair and the surrounding green nature of the Emsland region.
