Bremerhaven is situated at the mouth of the Weser into the North Sea and, as the largest city on the German North Sea coast, serves as a major maritime hub. Founded in 1827, it was established as an outport for Bremen because the Weser was becoming too shallow for modern seagoing vessels. Today, the cityscape is defined by the Havenwelten, a modern tourism center featuring attractions such as the German Emigration Center and the Climate House 8° East. As a center for research, the city hosts the renowned Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. The economic foundation is built on the massive container port and the significant fishing port, the latter famous for its culinary offerings. Despite extensive destruction during World War II, Bremerhaven has undergone dynamic development, combining maritime tradition with forward-looking science. The city also serves as a key departure port for cruise ships from around the globe.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
