Bremen Roland (Germany)

Weather…

The Bremen Roland has stood on the market square since 1404 as a prominent symbol of civic liberty and the market rights of the Hanseatic city. Standing at a total height of 10.21 meters including its base and canopy, it is the largest free-standing medieval statue in Germany. The figure depicts Charlemagne's paladin, wielding a sword named Durendart and carrying a shield with the imperial double-headed eagle, signifying the city's independence from the archbishop. In 2004, the statue was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site alongside the adjacent City Hall. A notable feature is the distance between the statue's knees, which measures exactly one Bremen ell (55.9 centimeters) and once served as a standard reference for market traders. Today, the Roland remains the city's most significant landmark and an architectural testament to late Gothic sculpture.
