The 'Viertel' in Bremen comprises the districts of Ostertor and Steintor and is considered the most lively and culturally diverse quarter of the Hanseatic city. Largely developed in the 19th century, it is characterized by the typical 'Bremer Häuser,' narrow terraced houses in a historicist style. Unlike vast parts of the city center, the architectural substance remained largely spared during World War II, preserving the quarter's authentic character. Today, the area is known for its high density of restaurants, small specialty shops, and cultural institutions such as the Theater am Goetheplatz. The Viertel serves as the hub of Bremen's subculture and nightlife while simultaneously offering high-quality residential space in close proximity to the Osterdeich and the Weser River. In the 1970s, a citizens' initiative prevented the construction of an urban highway through the quarter, which significantly contributed to the preservation of its social fabric. The blend of an alternative lifestyle, upscale architecture, and multicultural flair makes it one of Bremen's most sought-after neighborhoods.

Start your day in the Viertel, Bremen's most colorful district. The morning begins with classic art and architecture along the Kulturmeile, where the Kunsthalle and Villa Ichon offer a peaceful atmosphere. At noon, dive deeper into the alleys, passing by the old prison museum and the lively Goetheplatz. The afternoon is dedicated to alternative culture at the Lagerhaus and a refreshing ferry ride across the Weser. End the evening with a performance by the Shakespeare Company or in one of the district's many bars.
Explore Bremen on two wheels. The tour starts at the impressive Elephant Monument and leads through the green Wallanlagen into the Viertel. Here you combine art visits at the Kunsthalle with the relaxed flair of Villa Ichon. In the afternoon, use the Sielwall ferry to get to the other side of the Weser and enjoy the wide view of the river. A perfect mix of urban life and green relaxation.
Explore the highlights around the Viertel by car. After a stop at the Elephant Monument, it's best to park in the central Ostertor parking garage. From there, all major sights like the Kunsthalle, the theater, and Villa Ichon are within easy walking distance. Within the district, walking is the best choice as the streets are narrow and busy. In the afternoon, the Sielwall ferry provides a welcome break from city traffic.
