Bahia de Jiquilisco (El Salvador)

Weather…

Bahía de Jiquilisco is the largest estuarine and mangrove system in El Salvador and was recognized in 2005 as a Ramsar site of international importance. It covers an area of approximately 635 square kilometers in the Usulután department. The bay consists of a complex network of channels, islands, and peninsulas that provide a unique habitat for numerous endangered species. Its significance as a nesting ground for the Hawksbill sea turtle, a critically endangered species worldwide, is particularly noteworthy. The mangrove forests, which include four different species, act as a natural barrier against coastal erosion and serve as a nursery for fish and crustaceans. Notable islands include Isla de Méndez and Isla San Sebastián, where local communities subsist on sustainable resource use. The region gives excellent opportunities for ecotourism, including bird watching and kayaking through its tranquil waterways.
