Major Church of Bayamo (Cuba)

Weather…

The Parroquial Mayor de San Salvador de Bayamo is one of Cuba's most historically significant churches and the spiritual heart of the city of Bayamo. The original church was founded as early as 1513, though the current structure mostly dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. A pivotal event in Cuban history took place here on November 8, 1868, when the Cuban National Anthem, 'La Bayamesa,' was officially sung for the first time within its walls. During the war for independence in 1869, the citizens of Bayamo burned their own city to prevent it from falling to the Spanish, causing severe damage to the church. However, the 'La Dolorosa' chapel, built in 1740, largely survived and houses a magnificent Baroque altarpiece. After extensive 20th-century restorations, the church now exhibits a blend of colonial and neoclassical styles. It was declared a National Monument in 1978 and serves as the seat of the Diocese of Bayamo-Manzanillo.
