Toa River (Cuba)

Weather…

The Toa River is the most voluminous river in Cuba, flowing through the eastern province of Guantánamo. It originates in the Cuchillas de Toa mountain range and travels approximately 131 kilometers before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near the historic city of Baracoa. The river's drainage basin is a central component of the UNESCO Cuchillas del Toa Biosphere Reserve, which is one of the most biodiverse areas in the Caribbean. Its banks are lined with dense tropical rainforests that serve as a habitat for many endemic species of plants and animals. Because this region receives the highest annual rainfall in Cuba, the river maintains a very high discharge rate throughout the seasons. The Toa remains one of the few large Cuban rivers that has not been significantly altered by dams or large-scale irrigation projects. Its ecological integrity is of international significance for conservation efforts in the West Indies.
