Primero de Enero, formerly known as Violeta, is a municipality in the east of Ciego de Ávila province, whose development is closely linked to the industrialization of the sugar sector. The town was renamed in honor of the victory of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959. Architecturally, the place is characterized by the typical wooden and masonry houses of the former U.S. sugar companies, which created a planned and organized urban structure. The heart of the municipality is the sugar mill, which still provides a significant portion of the local economic output today. In addition to sugar, tobacco and citrus fruits are grown extensively in the region, favored by the fertile lowlands. Geographically, Primero de Enero is situated on a plain that forms the transition to the neighboring province of Camagüey. The municipality is also known for its railway history, as the rail was the primary mode of transport for the sugarcane harvest. Today, the town preserves the charm of a Cuban industrial city with a strong sense of community.
