Baraguá is a historically significant municipality in Ciego de Ávila province, whose name is inextricably linked to the Cuban struggle for independence. Although the famous 'Protest of Baraguá' in 1878 took place at a location of the same name in a different region, this municipality bears the name in honor of that event. The settlement structure is heavily influenced by British West Indian immigration at the beginning of the 20th century, which is reflected in the wooden architecture and the traditions of the English-speaking Caribbean. Economically, the sugar sector forms the backbone of the region, with the former 'Ecuador' sugar mill (formerly Baraguá) playing a central role. The town of Gaspar currently serves as the administrative headquarters of the municipality. The landscape is flat and intensively used for agriculture, particularly for the cultivation of root vegetables and bananas. Culturally, Baraguá is known for its unique Caribbean influences, which stand out from other Cuban regions in music, dance, and cuisine.
